Choosing Paper Cups Shows You Care for Your Consumers
Did you know that 88 percent of consumers want brands to help them lead a sustainable lifestyle? And for cups, they view paper as the material most likely to deliver this.

Help Them Make Memories—Not Waste
Today, a cup is more than just a cup. It’s a choice—one that represents who we are and what we want. Increasingly, consumers want to reduce their impact on the planet. And they want businesses to do more to help them achieve this by providing better packaging options, enabling them to spend their hard-earned dollars supporting brands that share their values.
Paper cups play a part in creating life’s everyday moments. For the teacher savoring a soda during a moment of peace between lessons. For the parent delighting their child with a surprise drive-thru meal after school. For the student running to the coffee shop for a caffeine boost during a well-earned study break.
Consumers don’t want to have to choose between drinking a refreshing cold beverage and protecting the planet—they want both, no strings attached. They want a cup that feels good in their hand, and on their conscience.

Consumers Are Voting With Their Wallets
48 percent of consumers across the globe say they would definitely or probably change their consumption habits to reduce their impact on the environment. When looking at Millennials, this figure rises to 75 percent. Globally, 45 percent of consumers actively avoid single-use plastic items.

56%
More than half of consumers feel that paperboard packaging helps to make things better for the environment.
58%
They feel the opposite way about plastic, with 58 percent feeling it’s worse for the environment.
61%
61 percent agree that the paper and paperboard industry is leaving the environment better than it found it.
Paper and paperboard packaging helps consumers feel good about their purchase.
Every drink served in a paper cup comes with a side order of positivity on the house. You can’t bottle that feeling—but you can serve it in a paper cup.
A Cold Beverage Experience With No Compromise
Sustainability alone won’t win over today’s consumer. Cold cups have to offer the kind of drinking experience that consumers want, keeping beverages cool and refreshing while minimizing condensation.
Performance Matters
Based on research conducted in 2023 by The Shelton Group, when offered a choice between a clear plastic cup and a paper cup that delivers better insulation and lower condensation for a more refreshing, comfortable drinking experience, consumers overwhelmingly prefer the latter. Their feelings are clear, but cups don’t need to be—just 11 percent said that they like to see their drink through the cup.
They also found that consumers rated the performance of paper cups as either “excellent” or “good” on the following factors:
- Feels comfortable on the mountain when sipping:
- 88 percent (cold)
- 93 percent (hot)
- Is safe to drink from and does not negatively impact their health:
- 86 percent (cold)
- 87 percent (hot)
- Does not impact the taste of the beverage inside:
- 84 percent (cold)
- 95 percent (hot)
- Feel good in the hand:
- 77 percent (cold)
- 85 percent (hot)
